On 11 February, the EU Platform on Sustainable Finance held its first plenary meeting and officially kick-started the third mandate. The European Construction Industry Federation (FIEC) has been appointed as one of the 35 members, proudly represented by Ms María Luísa Carrasco Martínez, CFO at FCC Construcción (ES), and supported by Jakob Thaysen Rørbech (DK).

The EU Platform on Sustainable Finance has been established under the Taxonomy Regulation as an advisory body to the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and the Capital Markets Union (DG FISMA). It is tasked with reviewing the technical taxonomy criteria and sustainability accounting and reporting standards.

The construction sector plays a vital role in Europe’s economic development and employment. In 2024, it accounted for 7.9% of EU GDP and provided almost 12 million direct jobs. The European construction industry is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, a goal that will require significant reductions in industrial emissions and enhanced circularity across the construction value chain. Achieving this transition will depend on substantial investments, making access to green finance essential. The EU Taxonomy, as the cornerstone of sustainable finance, should recognise and reward the contribution of contractors to sustainability and resilience objectives. By redirecting capital towards sustainable construction projects and establishing robust indicators to assess long-term investment performance, the sector can fully realise its potential as a driver of both economic growth and environmental sustainability.

FIEC previously participated in the Platform on Sustainable Finance during its 2020-2022 mandate.
