CLEARSITE holds first Steering Committee meeting in Brussels

On 13rd October, the EU-funded project CLEARSITE - Construction Legal Enforcement And Resources to Support the Integration and Treatment of TCNs in Europe - held its first Steering Committee meeting in Brussels. The meeting was hosted by the European Federation of Building and Woodworkers (EFBWW), the project coordinator.

Launched in September, CLEARSITE is a two-year project which brings together the EU-level construction social partners, EFBWW and FIEC. The initiative aims for fairer recruitment and integration of Third-Country Nationals (TCN) across the European construction sector, through the development of implementable guidelines.

The project is expected to build from the joint recommendations produced in the framework of the FELM project, which examined the rise in TCN workers and companies in the EU construction sector.

The first Steering Committee meeting brought together the official CLEARSITE Steering Committee members from both organisations, as well as external experts from the research institute HIVA-KU Leuven. Discussions covered an introduction to the project, its main objectives, key actions and expected deliverables, the role of the FELM project joint recommendations as the starting point as well as the project’s four case studies and research methodology.

The main deliverable will be a set of joint guidelines, drawing on desk research, four case studies and site visits in several EU countries. These guidelines will cover four key areas:

  • Safe and fair recruitment
  • Retention and integration of TCNs in the construction industry
  • Training of TCN workers
  • Cooperation with labour inspectors and enforcement bodies

This first Steering Committee meeting allowed participants to align on the project’s objectives and approach, laying the groundwork for its successful implementation.
