(Preliminary) Overview of main topics and items of discussions:
Water scarcity, heavy rainfall and flooding have become serious issues in many EU Member States. Those extreme weather events are already having a huge impact on citizens and on our economies – with the situation set to get worse in the coming years.
As the current EU legislative framework is failing to adequately address water challenges and furthermore to protect our societies and companies from physical damage and economic losses, at FIEC, we take this opportunity to contribute raising awareness on this topic and make it widely visible.
After the European Elections, re-elect European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, set-up her new College of Commissioners and choose a former Swedish Minister, Jessika Roswall as Commissioner-designate for Environment, Water Resilience, and a Competitive Circular Economy. Her portfolio includes strengthening water security through a European Water Resilience Strategy. Members of the European Parliament are also raising awareness to the topic by continued efforts in the Water Group or Intergroup on Water in the European Parliament.
A future European Water Resilience Strategy will require the active involvement of the construction sector. The strategy must recognise the crucial role of contractors in building new water infrastructure and maintaining and repairing existing infrastructure for treatment, distribution, storage, and flood protection.
FIEC Annual Conference 2025, to be hosted in Athens by our Greek member federation PEDMEDE, will be the ideal and one-in-a-kind platform - for all our members, invited experts and guests - to underline the commitment of the European construction industry to contribute to the work of legislators and regulators in this area.
We will shape discussions with open eyes on the future outlook, perspectives and scenarios of the involved sectors and related policies. FIEC will make it a live and impactful event by extending dialogue and exchange to the EU decision-makers who will join the debate.
The European construction industry has the expertise to build solutions to provide essential services in tackling water challenges.
