FIEC is partnering with DG Environment (ENV) and is now among the Ambassadors of the "Water Wise EU" campaign launched by the European Commission.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the increasing stress placed on Europe’s water systems and to spotlight the many available solutions to tackle issues related to water. ‘See water differently’ is the campaign slogan with the hashtag #WaterWiseEU.
The campaign was formally launched at the EU Green Week on water resilience, which took place on 29 and 30 May, and it will run until the end of September.
The campaign was officially opened by teh EU Executive Vice-President Maros Šefčovič. "(...) Circularity must be at the heart of integrated water management. We need a ‘water efficiency first' principle to reduce demand – and water that is not used, cannot be wasted. Reusing waste water, giving it a second life in agriculture, cities, energy production, or industrial processes, can help reduce the pressure on water supplies (...). With this ‘WaterWiseEU' campaign, we want to build a new consensus on longer-term measures and define an inclusive and comprehensive trajectory for the EU to achieve water resilience by 2050. We will need everybody on board in this work, and an innovative approach, if we are to achieve this. So I invite you not only to take part in the discussion, but also to spread the word wherever you go." - said EVP Šefčovič in his keynote address (read full published statement).
FIEC is a strong supporter of the idea of a European Blue Deal, as it believes that more water resilience is urgently needed in the EU.
At the EU Green Week, the European Commission and the Belgian EU Presidency stressed that the water cycle is broken and that more investment in water resilience is needed in the next EU budget. The incoming Hungarian Presidency stressed that water is not only a natural resource, but also a social and economic resource, and that investing in water means investing in industrial competitiveness. FIEC fully shares these views.
We join the European Commission's invitation to have an active role in the dissemination of this new communication campaign: the material and the visuals are available in all EU official languages. You can use the online toolkit for 'partners' to get involved and share the key messages among your networks.
